PURPOSE: An image display system having a function of generating script using caption information and a method for controlling the system are provided to transform caption information received from a broadcasting station to automatically convert the caption information into a form a user desires, store and search the caption information. CONSTITUTION: An image display system includes a caption information processor(10), a script file processor(200), a microcomputer(300), and a switch(400). The caption information processor extracts and decodes caption data included in a broadcasting signal. The script file processor analyzes the caption information processed by the caption information processor to script the caption information into a file having a form a user desires. The microcomputer transmits a control signal for controlling the operation of extracting and decoding the caption data to the caption information processor and outputs a control signal to the script file processor such that the caption information is generated as a script form. The switch selectively outputs the output of the caption information processor, the broadcasting signal and the output signal of the script file processor.
