Culture medium (A) comprising a specific polysaccharide (PS); an organic nitrogen source (Y); water; an indicator that changes color at pH 6.4-8, and an agent (X) that inhibits selectively growth of bacteria other than Salmonella, is new. Culture medium (A) contains a specific polysaccharide (PS); an organic nitrogen source (Y); water; an indicator that changes color at pH 6.4-8, and an agent (X) that inhibits selectively growth of bacteria other than Salmonella. PS comprises the repeating unit -[A-B-C-(F-G)-D-E]-n and includes one pyruvate group, on G, and 1-3 acetate groups (not located). It has apparent viscosity 7000-50000 mPa.s (at 20 [deg]C, using a Brookfield viscometer model DVII, module 4; speed 6). A : glucuronic acid; B, C and D : glucose; and E, F and G : galactose. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting Salmonella in food products and body tissues, using (A).
