PURPOSE: An air conditioner, and a method for controlling the same are provided to prevent lowering of the cooling or heating efficiency by preventing discharged air from flowing back into a main body with auxiliary blades. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner has a suction port(1) at a front of a main body(10), and discharge ports(2) at sides of the main body. A discharge control unit controls discharged air to prevent air discharged into an indoor space through the discharge ports from flowing back into the main body through the suction port. The discharge control unit includes blades for controlling direction of air discharged from the discharge ports, and a controller controlling operation of the blades. The blades include main blades(61,62) installed at a rear of the main body, and auxiliary blades(63,64) installed in front of the main blades.
