PURPOSE: An electron emission device and an image display apparatus having an electron source and a dipole layer are provided to enable electron emission with good ON/OFF characteristic, low voltage and high efficiency and obtain a display with high contrast using the electron emission device. CONSTITUTION: An electron emission device includes a cathode(1), an insulating layer(2), and an extraction electrode(3). The insulating layer covers a part of the surface of the cathode and has a dipole layer(5) on the surface thereof. A voltage is applied across the cathode and extraction electrode to generate electron emission in a vacuum state according to quantum mechanical tunneling of the insulating layer and a vacuum barrier(4).
