PURPOSE: An overrun prevention device and a method of an engine start motor are provided to improve durability of the start motor by minimizing an overrun period of the start motor by stopping automatically the motor if satisfying a self-start condition in starting an engine and to prevent breakage of the motor and a fire caused by excessive overrun of the start motor. CONSTITUTION: An overrun prevention device for an engine start motor is composed of a voltage detector(10) for detecting each voltage of a power unit(A) and a start relay grounding unit(L); an engine RPM(Revolution Per Minute) detecting unit(20) for sensing the RPM of an engine; a controller(30) for deciding engine cranking based on the voltage of the power unit and the start relay grounding unit, judging if satisfying a self-start condition of the engine based on the voltage of the power unit and the RPM of the engine for engine cranking, and outputting a control signal for stopping the start motor if the self-start condition of the engine; and a start relay control circuit(40) for stopping the start motor by turning off a start relay according to the control signal.
