PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a multi-layer coating film which can suppress a defective appearance caused by the evaporation of a solvent without retarding a coating process in a method for forming a three-coat one-baking multi-layer coating film. SOLUTION: After an aqueous intermediate coating material is applied, preliminary drying is done in conditions in which warm air on the surface of the coating film is expressed by the formula: (temperature-humidity)×(wind speed)^0.8×(time)≥50 so that the coating film solid content percentage of the intermediate coat coating film is made 70-98 wt.%. After an aqueous base coating material is applied, preliminary drying is done in conditions in which warm air on the surface of the coating film is expressed by the formula: (temperature-humidity)×(wind speed)^0.8×(time)≥170 so that the coating film solid content percentage of the base coating film is made 65-98 wt.%.
