The device has a signal path (12b) for the HF signal and a control path (14b) for a switching current for activating a switching process in the signal path with a switching element. The switch element is a switching section consisting of a superconductor that simultaneously forms part of the signal path and the control path and is connected via the control path to a current supply (18b) with which a current density can be produced in the switching section respectively above and below the critical current density for the superconducting properties of the switching section. An independent claim is included for a method of switching a high frequency electrical signal.
