<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which compensation of skewing of an image forming position or a deviation in horizontal registration can be carried out simultaneously with a simple constitution. <P>SOLUTION: In a no registration constitution, a recording sheet is irradiated with light from a surface light emitting element 145 and the quantity of skewing and deviation in horizontal registration are detected by detecting the range information of the recording sheet with an area sensor 146.
