PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To pickup an image of the object so as to obtain an output sensitivity that a user requests. SOLUTION: The image pickup device comprises a solid-state imaging device 1 which performs photoelectric transduction corresponding to received image pickup light, a switching part 10 for switching a first mode that is an image pickup mode of reading for each set of (n) ((n) is a natural number) of frames and a second mode that is an image pickup mode for reading charges stored in the solid-state imaging device for each set of (m) ((m) is a natural number) of fields, adding and outputting an odd-numbered charges and an even-numbered charge which are vertically adjacent in the read charges, while changing the combination thereof for each set of (m) fields, and a control part 9 for controlling the switching part 10 to switch the image pickup mode into the first mode in response to an image pickup request with a low output density and to switch the image pickup mode into the second mode in response to an image pickup request with a high output sensitivity. In response to the image pickup request with the low output sensitivity, the image pickup mode is switched into the first mode for reading the charges stored on the solid-state imaging device for each frame and in response to the image pickup request with the high output sensitivity, the image pickup mode is switched into the second mode for reading the charges stored in the solid-state imaging device for each field, adding out the odd-numbered charge and the even-numbered charge which are adjacent in the vertical direction among the read charges, while changing the combination thereof for each field, for picking up the image.
