PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable communication device with which information such as a telephone number in a telephone book desired by a user can be obtained as a search result by a simple operation. SOLUTION: If data corresponding to characters input by a user is determined to be absent in a list according to the kind of current search in S1051, data is retrieved beginning with the data at a position subsequent to a position where the corresponding data is to be present in the order listed in the list according to the kind of the current search in S1053. For example, when the search on a phonetic symbol (of the Japanese syllabary) is done, data of "Satake-san" and "Takagi-san" are listed in the phonetic symbol list, if the letter of "su" is input, the position where the data beginning with "su" should be present is between "Satake-san" and "Takagi-san", and the data at a position subsequent to a position where the data beginning with "su" is to be present is the one having the phonetic symbols of "Takagi-san".
