PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detection device which properly detects an obstacle to possibly come into contact with a vehicle by changing a detecting range in accordance with a steering angle when parking the vehicle having the obstacle detection device by backing it at a certain steering angle. SOLUTION: An ECU 2 computes a possible route 18 in accordance with the steering angle detected by a steering angle sensor 6 when a driver backs the vehicle 1 while turning a steering wheel 7 to the right. Thereafter, the ECU 2 inclines an ultrasonic sensor 3 to the opposite direction of the steering direction (to the left side in the drawing) and inclines an ultrasonic sensor 5 to the same direction of the steering direction (to the right side in the drawing) to detect the obstacle existing on the possible route 18. Additionally, the ECU 2 detects the obstacle existing in the neighborhood of a vehicle side surface by switching on an ultrasonic sensor 4a existing on the vehicle side surface on the opposite of the steering direction. Thereafter, the ECU 2 forcibly stops the vehicle 1 when the vehicle and the obstacle come to be within a specified distance from each other. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
