A method for the production of arylidene-acetones by reacting aromatic aldehydes with acetone in presence of barium hydroxide as catalyst involves carrying out the reaction in aqueous solution (in which the barium hydroxide is also dissolved). A method for the production of arylidene-acetones of formula (I) involves reacting an aromatic aldehyde of formula (II) with acetone in aqueous solution in presence of a catalytic amount of dissolved barium hydroxide (III). [Image] R 1>-R 5>H, 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C alkoxy. An independent claim is also included for an aqueous solution for the production of (I), containing aldehyde (II), acetone and (III).
