<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device of an internal combustion engine in which reduction in catalytic performance caused by retention of sulfur components is suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust emission control device includes a sulfur-component-retaining agent 23 provided in the path of an engine exhaust gas, and capable of retaining or releasing sulfur components, and an exhaust-emission-cleaning catalyst 26 whose exhaust-gas-cleaning performance is reduced by retaining sulfur components. The exhaust emission control device includes further a means for performing a sulfur-component-releasing treatment for releasing sulfur-component from the sulfur-component-retaining agent, and a temperature-raising means. The temperature-raising means raises the temperature of the catalyst to prescribed temperature or higher at which the catalyst does not retain the sulfur components at least for a part of time period during performance of the sulfur-component releasing treatment by the sulfur-component-releasing means. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
