PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reduction method which enables a high-speed execution even in a computer environment where an operating function is limited to addition, subtraction, and shift operation or the like, which prevents the occurrence of disappearance of a thin line, and which is appropriate for software processing. SOLUTION: The number of pixel Ns of X direction of a source image is compared with 2<SP>N</SP>in S13, then the process moves to S14 if the Ns is not more than 2<SP>N</SP>, and the value, which is found by dividing 2<SP>2N</SP>by the number of pixel Nd of a horizontal direction of a destination image, is calculated and set asα. If residual E is less than the number of pixel Nd of the horizontal direction of the destination image in S17, the pixel of the destination image is found as (Pd=Ps(Xs)+(α×E×Ps(Xs+1)-Ps(Xs)))/2<SP>2N</SP>in S19.
