PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use an apparatus for separating volatile, floating particles so that only the solid dust/dirt particles remain for sufficient characterizing or treating of aerosol. SOLUTION: Regarding characterizing, separating, and/or eliminating floating particles in the carrier gas of the aerosol, the aerosol is heated to the temperature at which the volatile particles evaporate, floating particles at a first stage according to a first embodiment. Then, the aerosol is diluted by a dilution gas at a second stage, so that the volatile floating particles are eliminated. The first and second stage orders can be changed. Dilution of feed gas is made so that the feed gas is supplied to a measurement gas passage, wherein the measurement gas penetrates, and the amount of feed gas that is carried out for each time unit depends on the volumetric flow in the feed gas passage, according to a second embodiment. Not only the number of stray light pulses to be measured, but also the intensity are evaluated, since an expression regarding measurement reliability can be made in a condensation nucleus counter according to a third embodiment.
