PURPOSE:To produce a polyhydric phenol for stabilizer, antioxidant, polymerization inhibitor, etc., in high selectivity and yield by oxidizing phenols with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acid catalyst using a nitrogen-containing aprotic polar solvent as a solvent. CONSTITUTION:Phenols (containing phenol and substituted phenol such as alkyl phenol or halogenated phenol) are oxidized with hydrogen peroxide using a nitrogen-containing aprotic polar solvent (especially preferably nitrile compound such as acetonitrile or nitro compound such as nitrobenzene) in the presence of an acid catalyst (e.g., sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or solid acid) to provide the polyhydric phenol (e.g., 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene). Furthermore, yield of the polyhydric phenol can be enhanced by adding ketones such as methylisobutyl ketone or cyclohexanone to the above-mentioned reaction liquid. |
