Method for testing the operability of a process actuator unit (1) with a control element (2), an actuator drive (3) for moving the control element and a position regulator (7) in a safety circuit. The method has the following steps: generation or a control signal for partial movement of the control element; control of the actuator drive based on the control signal; detection of measurement signals that indicate movement of the control element and return of the control element to its start position. An independent claim is made for a device for testing the operability of a process actuator unit.
