PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a fluid for a shock absorber of long life capable of exercising the stable performance regardless of the change of a temperature, and preventing the impairing of the performance caused by the air deposition. SOLUTION: The fluid for the shock absorber is composed of a base oil and a thixotropy imparter. The fluid for the shock absorber having a thixotropy index of 200-600, the fluid for the shock absorber wherein the base oil is a mineral oil of high purification or synthetic hydrocarbon oil, and the thixotropy imparter is one or more kinds of solid fine particles selected from a group composed of carbon black, silica, clay mineral, carbon nanotube and fullerene, the fluid for the shock absorber wherein a particle size of the solid fine particles is 0.01-5μm, and the fluid for the shock absorber wherein the amount of thixotropy imparter is 1-15 mass% are properly provided.
