PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coin selector for enabling the setting of reference data taking into account characteristics of the coin selector even if no coin is put in, but disabling an easy setting change of the reference data on the coin selector, and to provide an external setting device therefor. SOLUTION: This coin selector has: a plurality of reference data storage means; a selection effectiveness means for making one of the reference data storage means effective on the basis of direction from the external setting device; a decision means for comparing storage data of the reference data storage means made to be effective with data based on output of a coin sensor to output a genuineness/imitation signal; and a gate control means for controlling a gate on the basis of the output of the decision means.
