PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the cost of an image detector for paper currency, and to reduce its size as the whole. SOLUTION: This detector is provided with a pair of detecting units 13 arranged, inside a unit body 18, with an image detecting sensor 24 for detecting an image in the first detection area set in one side of the unit body 18, the first light emitting means 27 for emitting light toward the first detection area, and the second light emitting means 31 for emitting light toward the second detection area set in a position different from the first detection area in the one side of the unit body 18. The paired detecting units 13 are oppositely arranged, sandwiching a paper currency conveying passage 12 therebetween, to detect an image of the second detection area in the one side detecting unit 13 by the image detecting sensor 24 in the other side detecting unit 13.
