PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet thickness sensing device including a lever contacting with the surface of a paper sheet and making displacement in compliance with the level of the sheet surface, capable of prolonging the lifetime of the lever by reducing the wear amount of its contacting part with the sheet surface. SOLUTION: The arrangement according to the invention comprises a paper sheet transport path to pass through this sheet thickness sensing device, another sheet transport path which does not pass through the sheet thickness sensing device, and a transport path changeover means to select one of these paths any as desired, and is configured so that the sheet is fed to the former path by the changeover means only when the sheet thickness is to be sensed. Further the arrangement includes a transport sensor flag installed downstream of the lever belonging to the thickness sensing device about the sheet transporting direction for judging whether any sheet exists and configured so that the lever retracts from the sheet transport path interlocking with the motion of the transport sensor flag.
