A tool for extracting an underground pipe and crushing same is positioned into an access pit into which the pipe is pulled by preset amounts via a pulling element (4) fitted through the pipe and grips at the free end. The puller (3) is servo powered as are two grips (14) which fasten onto the pulled pipe with a self centring action while the tensile grip is pushed back, and which are operated with increasing servo force to crush the brittle pipe, or cut off lengths sufficiently short to remove from the pit.
