The chuck for holding work in a lathe has the clamping jaws (16) formed as integral pieces each with two clamping faces (21,22) to engage the work (7). One of the clamping faces (21) is shaped to allow tolerance compensation between the diameters (a,b) of a stepped workpiece. The face can have a slot (25) to allow one contact surface (21) of the face to spring radially and compensate for the stepped work surface.
