Rotary cutter, especially a chisel cutter, comprises a drum rotating about a horizontal axis and provided with chisels distributed uniformly about its periphery, and an overload device for uncoupling the drum from a drive shaft (3). The overload device has two counter-rotating friction surfaces in the form of the disks (8, 9) of a sliding clutch that are pre-tensioned by a spring. Roller bodies (10) are distributed uniformly between the friction surfaces on their periphery. The friction surfaces are provided with recesses (12) and with a running track for the roller bodies. The number of roller bodies is an integral multiple or an integral fraction of the number of chisels. Independent claims are also included for: (1) Sliding clutch, especially for rotary cutters; and (2) Use of a sliding clutch in the above rotary cutter.
