PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystal material, a liquid crystal composition having a negative dielectric constant anisotropy having a wide temperature range and a large absolute value by using the same material as a key component, and further a liquid crystal-displaying element such as a VA type having high reliability. SOLUTION: This difluorotetrahydronaphthalene derivative is expressed by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>a</SP>is a 2-5C straight chain alkyl; and R<SP>b</SP>is a 1-5C straight chain alkyl). The method for producing the same, the intermediate of the same, and a liquid crystal composition containing the compound expressed by the general formula (1) and the liquid crystal-displaying element by using the same composition are also provided.
