PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the gel fraction or solvent resistance of a coating film without using a curing agent or a crosslinking agent. SOLUTION: The water-based coating composition comprises as dispersed particles formed by bonding nanosized particles with a vinyl polymer directly or through a nonionic surfactant. The vinyl polymer can be prepared by polymerizing a monomer having functional groups selected from among carboxy groups, epoxy groups, hydroxy groups, and hydrolyzable silyl groups with at least one monomer selected from among a (meth)acrylic monomer, an aromatic vinyl monomer, and a vinyl ester monomer. Such a composition, though it is a water-based one-package coating composition, can give a coating film improved in gel fraction or organic solvent resistance without using a curing agent or a crosslinking agent.
