PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of surface coated cermet having a hard coating layer, which shows excellent abrasion resistance in high-speed cutting. SOLUTION: This cutting tool made of surface coated cermet is formed by physically vapor-depositing hard coating layers, which are formed of an aluminum oxide layer having 0.2-3μm of mean layer thickness as an upper layer and a compound nitride layer containing Al and T and having 0.8-8μm of mean layer thickness as a lower layer, to a surface of a tungsten carbide group carbide alloy base body or nitrocarbonized titanium-based cermet base body. The lower layer has the component density distribution structure where the maximum Al-containing points and minimum Al-containing points alternately repeatedly exist with the predetermined interval, and content rate of Al and Ti between both the points is continuously changed. Furthermore, the lower layer is formed of the compound nitride layer of Al and Ti wherein the minimum Al-containing point and the maximum Al-containing point respectively satisfy a specified composition formula and an interval between the minimum Al-containing point and the maximum Al-containing point adjacent to each other is formed at 0.01-0.1μm.
