PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a formation method for a battery jar for efficiently obtaining a lead-acid storage battery excellent in a service life property. SOLUTION: In a formation method for a battery jar of a lead-acid storage battery using as a positive grid a corrosion-resistant lead alloy (Pb-Ca-Sn-Ba-Al alloy, Pb-Ca-Sn-Ba alloy or a lead alloy etc. in which at least one kind among Ag, Bi or Tl is added therein), preliminary charging is performed by energizing a current not exceeding a gas generation potential for not less than 10 minutes before the formation of the battery jar, then, the formation is conducted. The energizing current density in the preliminary charging is set at 3.5 to 7.1 mA per g of an active material or 1.3 to 2.3 mA per cm<SP>2</SP>of an electrode plate area for a positive electrode, and set at 4.1 to 8.3 mA per g of the active material or 1.3 to 2.6 mA per cm<SP>2</SP>of an electrode plate area for a negative electrode.
