PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain occurrence of an error caused when reception coils are provided inclinedly measuring-directionally with respect to a scale coil, in the reception coils of a magnetic encoder arranged with a plurality of phase differences. SOLUTION: Paired areas for paired n-th and -n-th coil elements having the same distance from the center are regulated in the reception coil 30R to conform gravity centers of coil cross-sections of the two coil elements with the center position of the central reception coil 30C.
