PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an opening and closing device for a doorway of an elevator capable of closing certainly the gap between the edge of the doorway and a sliding door when the sliding door is closed fully. SOLUTION: The sliding door 9 is provided while a gap is formed at the edge of the doorway 1, and the doorway 1 is opened and closed by moving in the width direction of the doorway 1. An elevating/sinking mechanism 10 is installed on a grip 8 engaged movably with a rail 7 at the upper edge 3 of the doorway 1 and the sliding door 9 is hung. The sliding door 9 is lowered by the elevating/sinking mechanism 10 when the door 9 is closed fully, and the gap between the bottom of the door 9 and a member at the lower edge 5 of the doorway 1 is closed, and the flames and smoke in the event of a fire are prevented from intruding into the elevator pit from the lower edge. A closing motion of the sliding door 9 from the position immediately before full closing is not required for closing the gap at the lower edge of the door 9, and there is no risk to make collision at the time of full closing or generate a gap owing to imperfect performance of full closing.
