PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recorder capable of executing an efficient recording scheme by applying a thermal assist magnetic recording operation on a patterned medium. SOLUTION: This magnetic recorder is characterized by providing a magnetic recording medium having a recording layer arraying patterned ferromagnetic areas thereon, a head including a magnetic field impressing means for impressing a recording magnetic field on the recording layer and a heating element for heating the above recording layer, a pulse modulation circuit for pulse-forming the heating made by the heating element, and a control means for controlling a pulse width of the heating pulse made by the heating element so as to be shortened than the time during the heating element is passed through the ferromagnetic area of the recording layer.
