PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moving handrail in which problems of known devices can be solved, and which is also usable with a glass parapet. SOLUTION: In the escalator or the moving sidewalk, the moving handrail 4 is inverted by an reversing sheave 10 which is rotated around an axle 9 supported at a center, and having width roughly similar to that of a balustrade 3. The axle 9 is held by at least one supporting side plate 11. This moving handrail drive device 20 integrated inside a balustrade base 2 drives the reversing sheave 10 by a drive wheel 23.
