PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device capable of accurately and surely detecting that a person enters the optical path of projected light and constituting a detection means at low cost, and a screen used for the projection type image display device. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device 1 is equipped with the screen 3 on which an image is displayed, and a projection means 2 for projecting the image to the screen 3, and provided with an illumination means 11 emitting light on the outer side of the image display area 10 of the screen 3, and provided with the detection means 4 for detecting the light emitted from the illumination means 11 on the projection means 2 side.
