PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a software license authenticating method capable of excluding a license management server, performing license authentication of software installed in each of computers connected to a network and preventing the illegal use of the software. SOLUTION: A 1st computer for starting software finds out the number of licenses of the software from management numbers accompanying the software including the information of the number of licenses for permitting the use of the software and then requests a plurality of 2nd computers connected to the network to report the management numbers. The number of 2nd computers having the same management number as that of the software started by the 1st computer out of the management numbers is counted, and when the number of 2nd computers is less than the number of licenses for permitting the start of the software, the use of the software is permitted.
