PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image detector for paper currency which enables cost reduction. SOLUTION: This detector is provided with a pair of detecting units 13 arranged, in a unit body 18, with an image detecting sensor 24 for detecting an image of a detection area Z set at one side of the unit main body 18, and arranged with a light emitting means 27 for emitting light toward the detection area Z, to sandwich a paper currency conveying passage 12 therebetween oppositely. The light is emitted from the light emitting means 27 (27X) to detect reflection light of the light from a paper currency by the image detecting sensor 24 (24X), transmission light, in the paper currency, of the light from the light emitting means 27 (27X) is detected by the image detecting sensor 24 (24Y), and the light is emitted from the light emitting means 27 (27Y) to detect reflection light of the light from the paper currency by the image detecting sensor 24 (24Y).
