The exhaust component (5) has a double-walled casing (6). The air cavity (13) between the inner and outer jackets (5a, 5b) is sealed off to make it gas-tight so that it can be filled with an inert gas such as nitrogen, which may be at negative pressure of about 300 millibars at room temperature. This prevents the tarnishing of the surfaces (30, 31) so that the insulation effect of the component is improved.
