An automotive exhaust system has a catalytic converter with a cylindrical inlet to a housing with a rectangular cross section as seen end-on. The housing contains a petal-format catalytic substrate. Each petal is sub-divided into chambers (23) with cascading gas outlets (34) discharging in line with the main gas flow axis (39). An independent claim is also included for the production of the above catalytic converter in which the catalytic substrate is formed from a single die-cut and folded metal panel with sidewalls. The sidewalls interlock with the mantle.
