PURPOSE: A projection type image display device having plural lamps and a method for operating the same are provided to reduce a delay time required when turning on plural lamps. CONSTITUTION: A projection type image display device(300) having plural lamps includes a microcomputer(310) controlling an operation of each element of a projection type image display device. An optical engine includes at least two lamps(210,214), at least two sensors(212,216) for sensing a temperature of each lamp, and a composition prism(218) for reflecting a white light by receiving the white light inputted thereto from the lamp. Driving circuit units(312,314) are provided to control an operation of the lamp corresponding to a control signal inputted from the microcomputer(310).
