PURPOSE: An optical line simulator and an optical line simulating method using the simulator are provided to test the transmission characteristics of an optical transmission device without substantially installing an optical line, thereby remarkably reducing a test space while quickly and accurately conducting a transmission characteristic test for the optical transmission device and optical elements such as an optical amplifier, a CD(Chromatic Dispersion) compensating element, and a PMD(Polarization Mode Dispersion) compensating element. CONSTITUTION: Variable optical attenuators(10,13) variably perform optical attenuation processes for inputted optical wavelengths. Variable chromatic dispersion generators(11,14) variably generate the chromatic dispersion for the attenuated optical wavelengths. Variable polarization mode dispersion generators(12,15) variably generate the polarization mode dispersion for the optical wavelengths at which the chromatic dispersion occurs, and output the distributed optical wavelengths. A control device(8) receives the length of an optical line and a polarization mode dispersion value from a user, calculates an optical attenuation value and a chromatic dispersion value by using the length of the optical line, applies the optical attenuation value to the optical attenuator (10,13) while applying the chromatic dispersion value to the chromatic dispersion generators(11,14), and then applies the polarization mode dispersion value to the polarization mode dispersion generators(12,15) to conduct a test for the transmission characteristic of the optical line. A memory(9) stores attenuation coefficients and chromatic dispersion coefficients. |
