The process involves increasing mass flow of an exhaust gas in an internal combustion engine. A pressure variation in the upstream of a particle filter (20) in the exhaust gas zone (18) is determined. The load state of the filter is determined from the pressure variation. A threshold value is provided for the load state of the filter. The filter is regenerated if the load exceeds the threshold value.
