PURPOSE: An IPS(In-Plane Switching) mode LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to enable the brightness, especially maximum brightness, to be enhanced. CONSTITUTION: A TFT(Thin Film Transistor)(209) formed on the first substrate comprises a gate electrode(201a), an active layer(205) and source/drain electrodes(202a,202b) formed on the active layer. A gate insulation film(208) for insulating the active layer and the source/drain electrodes is formed on the entire surface of the substrate. A color filter(223) having plural holes(230) for exposing a portion of a gate insulation layer is formed on the gate insulation layer. An overcoat film(225) for planarizing the substrate is formed on the entire surface of the substrate including the color filter. A common electrode(206) and a pixel electrode(207) are formed on the overcoat film(225) and a hole(230).
