发明名称 BISTABLE NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE
摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a liquid crystal display device having an alignment layer with a stabilized initial alignment state switch between one metastable state and the other metastable state out of the two metastable states corresponding to an applied voltage with good reproducibility. SOLUTION: The bistable nematic liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal cell having a weak anchoring alignment layer 16 disposed on the liquid crystal layer side of one substrate and a strong anchoring alignment layer disposed on the liquid crystal layer side of the other substrate and is constructed so as to control alignment of liquid crystal molecules of the chiral nematic liquid crystal layer to be in either state out of the two metastable states different from the initial state corresponding to the applied voltage. The weak anchoring alignment layer 16 consists of a polymer film with shape anisotropy imparted at least on the surface, has anchoring energy a half or less of that of the strong anchoring alignment layer and is formed so as to have a pretilt angle of nearly 0°.
