PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detergent additive which increases solubility to water and solids content when added to a detergent, and a detergent composition containing the same which improves hue stability. SOLUTION: This detergent additive is composed of a salt obtained from a polycarboxylic acid mixture comprising a content of 1,3,6-hexanetricarboxylic acid of ≥80 mass%, a content of adipic acid of ≤10 mass%, a content of 3-carboxymethyl-1,5-pentanedicarboxylic acid of ≤10 mass%, and an RI detection component of ≤0.5 mass%, and the brightness index L of an aqueous solution obtained by dissolving 0.400 g polycarboxylic acid mixture in 4.0 mL distilled water is ≥98, and the chromaticness index a is -2.0 to 2.0 and the chromaticness index b is -2.0 to 3.0.
