PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device which can search desired contents from among many contents without forcing a user to perform complicated operations. SOLUTION: In the recording and reproducing device, contents to be reserved for videotape recording are specified from videotape recording reservation information or the contents are specified by a user. When there is no identical contents of different videotape recording dates and hours, a videotape recording folder is automatically generated on the basis of the specified contents, and when there are identical contents, sub-folders are automatically prepared under the videotape folder. When the time of starting the reserved videotape recording arrives, the device records a video image on a videotape, analyzes the video image and extracts scenes in which the video image changes to generate thumb-nails as indexes, and records the generated thumb-nails by associating them with the video recording folder or the sub-folders for every scene. In reproducing the recorded video, the device display the videotape recording folders, sub-folders and thumb-nails hierarchically and selects thumb-nails corresponding to the contents desired by the user from among them and reproduces the video image according to the selected thumb-nails.
