PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly eliminate clogging at a discharge port caused by garbage when operating a garbage compressing device which dehydrates the garbage with a screw dehydrator. SOLUTION: A pressing lid 6, which is fixed with hinges 8, is arranged on a discharge port 7 of a screen cylinder 5 which surrounds a screw 3 for conveying the garbage and which has a large number of dehydrating holes. The lid 6 is equipped with a lever 11 pressing the lid against the discharge port. A reference weight 12 is hanged by a wire rope 15 connected to the lever 11 so that the pressing lid 6 is pressed against the discharge port 7 with a minimum required pressing force. An additional weight 16 hanged by a wire rope 18 similarly gives a pressing force required for dehydration. When the screw 3 becomes overloaded, a lifter 19 lifts the additional weight 16 to eliminate the pressing force by the weight 16, so that the pressing force of the pressing lid 6 is rapidly reduced and the garbage solidified at the discharge port 7 is discharged.
