The invention relates to a safety device for a shell structure of a motor vehicle, comprising lateral longitudinal beams (5) that extend from a wheel house along the outer shell structure in the direction of driving (F), and a shock absorber arrangement (7) which is disposed in front of the wheel house (4) relative to the direction of driving and is provided with a cross member (12) and an energy-absorbing element. The aim of the invention is to create a safety device for a shell structure of a motor vehicle, by means of which passenger safety is increased. Said aim is achieved by disposing the energy-absorbing element on the cross member (12) at the level of the wheel house (4) such that said energy-absorbing element extends between the cross member (12) and the wheel house (4).
