PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission capable of shortening an axial dimension and a center distance. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission comprises a counter drive gear 20 having a shaft part 34 and a gear part 36, a case 28 adjacent to the gear part 36 and having a support wall 40 rotatably supporting the shaft part 34, friction plates 62 and 64, a piston 66, and a friction engagement device 86 having a hydraulic chamber 82. A recessed part 74 is formed in the side face of the support wall 40 on a side opposed to the gear part 36. The piston 66 comprises a tubular part 68 in which the radial outer portion of the meshed portion of a counter drive gear 20 is cut out and a bottom part 72 stored in the recessed part 74, and disposed on the radial outer side of the gear part 36. The oil chamber 82 is formed between the bottom part 72 of the piston 66 and the recessed part 74, and the friction plates 62 and 64 are disposed at the side of the gear part 36 on the opposite side of a side where the bottom part 72 of the piston 66 is disposed.
