<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound having high Δn, not colored with irradiation of ultraviolet light, capable of being inexpensively synthesized and useful for preparation of a retardation plate and to provide the retardation plate having good optical performances by utilizing the compound. <P>SOLUTION: The compound is represented by general formula (I): B<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>1</SP>-A<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>2</SP>-(A<SP>2</SP>-X<SP>3</SP>)<SB>l</SB>-B<SP>2</SP>(wherein X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>3</SP>are each substituted or unsubstituted 1,4-phenylene group or a heterocyclic aromatic group and at least one of X<SP>1</SP>and X<SP>2</SP>is a five-membered heterocyclic aromatic group or a six-membered heterocyclic aromatic group or a condensed ring group containing those; B<SP>1</SP>and B<SP>2</SP>are each a hydrogen atom or a substituent group and at least one of B<SP>1</SP>and B<SP>2</SP>includes a polymerizable group; l is 0 or 1; A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each COO, OCO or the like).
