PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate an entirely bright image in which an object in a region to be photographed has gradation, irrespective of a distance from an imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: First image pickup for imaging the object while a flash emission 14 does not emit a flash, second pickup for imaging the object while a weak flash is emitted, and third image pickup for imaging the object while a strong flash is emitted are performed. An overexposure pixel in which a luminance signal Y generated from an image signal obtained by the third image pickup is F1 or more are detected. Computation represented by the following formula is performed to generate a normalized luminance signal S1, the luminance signal Y of the overexposure pixels among the luminance signal Y obtained by the third image pickup is replaced by the normalized luminance signal S1, and then an image is generated.
