PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material having a fine microstructure, and a production method of the composite material by which a desired final shape, especially a large and complex shape, can be obtained. SOLUTION: The composite material is produced by dispersing a dispersed material in a matrix by means of generating an aluminide intermetallic compound. The intermetallic compound is generated by filling a mixed material and first aluminum (Al) in a solid state into a reaction vessel so that the first aluminum (Al) is at least partially included in the mixed material, pouring second molten aluminum (Al) prepared aside from the first aluminum (Al) into the reaction vessel so that it brings into contact with the exterior of the mixed material, heating and melting the first aluminum (Al) to obtain first molten aluminum (Al) that contacts with the interior of the mixed material and impregnating the mixed material with the molten aluminum (Al) through self-combustion of the molten aluminum (Al) and a metal powder composing the mixed material.
